I've found that with a limited advertising budget, I can't afford really high CPC prices. Instead, I try to find obscure, but relevant, keywords that have lower CPCs. The downside to this is that the traffic for each of these obscure keywords is pretty small, so you have to come up with a rather large list of keywords in order to get significant traffic. I use several tactics to find obscure keywords: complimentary words misspellings competitors product names (if you are selling a product) singular/plural variations when using phrases, find new phrases by removing spaces between words I just thought I would pass this along. If anyone is interested, I've written up a longer description of this technique.
the "Obscure" title in my opinion is a too obscure word for a normal procedure for finding alternative keywords. Have all these methods in mind but: Let the keywords tool suggest the keywords for you. Do not waste your time trying to add misspellings by your self. Be in mind that when you use these non focused keywords like competitors name - you convert but maybe you do not convert so well so maybe is a good idea to start bidding a lower value for it.
I've found that the google keyword suggestion tool only comes up with terms that are the most popular, thus the most expensive. That is why I had to find a different method for finding low cost keywords.
no, this is not true. its shows terms from all kind of popularity and all kind of cost - go to the keywords tool and you will see that there is a combo box that you can activate these two columns. Use only the keyword tool to add the keywords that you need. its a good idea to keep in mind that exist different classification of keywords like you did and give them different bid values - but use the keyword tool to do not risk wasting time adding tons of keywords that will not produce impressions in years.

The Google tool is junk compared to YSM's. Once you have a list of 'base' keywords, think of synonyms and research those too and then generate combinations of those words. I find that this technique captures most of the tail keywords.
The minimum google bid is also what I am trying to get around. I normally don't bid over $.05 for most keywords. But for google, I have to be pretty creative in order to get the keyword active for search. For some of my websites, I need a maximum of $.05 bid in order for my ROI to work out.
