What is the best way to search for phpBB and vbulletin forums with PR on the pages?

As a person overseeing a forum that has been badly spammed by a porn peddler your query concerning forums with page rank really worries me. It sounds like you are looking for a list of forums to spam.

I hope I am misreading your query in light of the bad experience I have had.

I think you are correct. With the Google algo looking for links etc. forums becomes a obvious target for these kinds of spamming. Being an SEO forum makes even more probable to be the target for such people as these forums ussually are optimized and high PR. However, it is not a bad question from an SEO or online marketing perspective and I will surely follow this thread. Surely as a member of forums you build a reputation and mods have the right to remove whatever damage spammers can do with their useless posts. However it comes down to the more effort you put in the bigger is the return that you get.

I contribute to lots of forums and I just thought it would be nice if I could put my signature tag on it and get some PR and links. Don't consider that spam myself.

I agree. People contribute in a lot of ways, and there's no reason why BLinks shouldn't be part of it. If I read something I like, I hunt for the posters site. I prefer the ease of sigs.

Any WMs worried about spamming will prolly prevent sigs/URL's in posts anyway, or like this forum, have a minimum post requirement.

Just remember a clever tourist is still a tourist, and most WMs see them a mile off :)

I agree. I see it as a "win / win" situation. User gets a few link, forum gets new fresh content...seems like an even trade.

Our forum allows signatures and it's even got a hack installed for better thread caching....as the forum gets better PR so do some of the threads. It gives incentive to people to start threads I guess.

I agree with you! If you are possitively contributing to a forum NO PROBLEM. But if you are adding a bunch I agree and Roses are blue posts it becomes a bit like spamming. Never mind those that are developing software to automate posts.

Forums should be a relaxed place where people can disscuss something they have incommon not a link farm!

For a list of the largest and most active forums on the web, the Big Boards list just can't be beat. Largest known forum as of this moment: Gaia Online, with 375,532,634 posts and 2,484,512 users, running a very customized version of phpBB. Those are some big numbers indeed :D

    My God 2,484,512 :)

Anyway does Google really give the links of forums the same weightage as normal links ? I will be glad if they do ...:p

If that's truly your motivation, then just participate in forums that interest you, put your site(s) in your forum sig for forums that permit that, and stop worrying about the forums' PR.
