Hi Folks, How are you finding your niche for new websites? Preferrebly focused for adsense/ypn revenue stream. Also I would like to know what are the factors that you consider for being a good niche? So far from my experiments I conclude these observations. Never go for webmaster related website, low earning. Money related are good, but competetive. Health related being high earning, but competetive. But the intermediate ideas are still unknown. I have read posts by shoemoney and fryman about finding niches. But it seems not working for me. Any other ideas ? Thanks in advance.
Go with what you know. If you start up a site about something you know about like the back of your hand you can work on it and have fun and get some money out of it.
In my case, two easy ways to find and select a niche : 1) My interests, and field of competences related : I just check for the market (both quantitative date and qualitative by understanding competitor positionning and "prospects" searches) 2)Opportunistic approach : use some tools as Wordtracker and some keywords reports to find a profitable niche : a specific market with well identified needs, and where the internet channel is efficient to deliver the expected value. Once again you have to analyse the market, especially for the qualitative part (even if it's a highly competitive market, as you're in an opportunistic approach) : what are people waiting for (in depth analysis of keyword searches), what are competitors offering, what are the holes and gap between expectations and offers : THIS will be your place and positionning In both cases, you have to clearly identify what will make you different, why customers will come to you, and what you want them to do once on your site : then you design your site and all your marketing actions (advertising, traffic generating related actions, linking strategy, content development...) to match your positionning In summary, use this JAck Welch quote "if you don't have any competitive advantage, don't compete" My 3 cents view on internet marketing (excuse my english, I'm from Europe)
I just think of all kind of themes and write them on a paper. Then I check out overture to see if there are any popular keywords for them, then I check google to see if there are enough ads related for the theme, and also check on how competitive it is. No use on building a site about blue bananas where you will get no ads and end up with 2 visitors per month. How do I find the themes? Well, that is the most difficult part. I can spend a week trying and not being able to think about anything, then one day 5 themes pop into my head at once. I also ask my friends about possible themes. What I define as niche is a very targeted site where there isn't really much competiton. Once I think of one, I build a minisite, just a few pages with articles and information about it. Possible niches would be for example a site talking about headaches, or one talking about bad breath in dogs, stuff like that
This is my way on how to proceed: find a domain where people use to spend lots of money, this will make sure that the ads displayed will be high paying (think at cosmetic surgery for instance). Then identify the keywords related with that field (using Ouverture or Wordtracker). Find out which of them represent a niche (low competition) and build a website around it. It's fun and besides I learn a lot of things on that subject while building the site.
Thanks Guys! Thanks for the great hints. As far as I can start with some ideas, I guess I will be able to devise my own way of finding niches. Just need some kick-start. Thanks a ton! Best Regards, Tuning
Since nowadays when you open a site you have to wait a year before starting to rank at Google and Yahoo also takes quite a long time, you are just stuck to MSN. And considering that MSN doesn't send much traffic, I look for keywords with at least a 30,000 or 40,000 overture, anything below that will send no traffic from MSN
Fryman, What size site would you normally create ? I typically deploy large sites (pages usually number in the tens of thousands), but this is because IMHO MSN loves large sites.. Do you just create a microsite type of thing with say 5 or 10 pages, or do you have an optimal number of pages you prefer.. ..and how many uniques per day would you expect by default with a small site.. (ie ratio to Overture figures). Cheers, JL
I don't know how you could create sites with thousands of pages, at least not with white hat techniques But I have seen that MSN does like small sites, minisites with 5-10 pages are more than enough to get a good ranking, as long as you have good seo on them and get enough backlinks to push them up. Put good content on them, use good banner placement, and you will be getting a few daily clicks from each site. But, as I said, the trafic is indeed small, you will need to build lots of sites if you want to make some good income. I was building a site per week until I run out of niches... I guess I need to have a chat with my friends and see what they new themes they can think about. The average uniques I get per site is about 30 each day, but I do have a great CTR so income is quite nice.
lol, don't really know, I sometimes forget about them until I see a click appear in my adsense stats. Must be like 35
fryman, Do you keep all of your sites under one AS account or do you have a separate account for each?
You can't have more than one account unless you do some complicated stuff like building a whole bunch of enterprises... I just have one account. My sites have good content so there is nothing to be afraid of.
Fryman I heard many ppl saying that MSN doesnt send traffic to their Sites, but what amaze me is the fact MSN is the 2nd most traffic sender SE for my site e-greetingz.com after Google yahoo is the 3rd. i get 45% of total SE traffic from google 31% from MSN and 18% from yahoo rest 6% comes from several SEs.
