Filter Low Paying Ads?

I use the Overture Bid Tool to see which ad bids are low paying and filter them out in my Adsense account. Others say to filter, other say to not filter. Which one is it?

I don't understand why you would do this since Overture's bid tool is showing the bids for Overture, not AdWords. You can use Overture's tool to guess how much a keyword can be worth, but I don't think you could accurately use it to be sure exactly how much a site is paying Google for your clicks.

What they say in AdSense blog is that you shoukd not try to filter any low paying ads away, just competitive or not even those. The AdSense team says that they try anyway to find the best paying solution to your content and you should concentrate in your content only.

By keeping a close eye on the ads that appear on your site and your adsense earnings you can sometime "guess" low paying ads and through trial and error, optimization is possible.....I have made some progress this way. But I would not use keyword filters to block potentially good paying ads.

I don't entirely agree with that. I filter some odd ~50 URLs off my site and it helped improve my revenue quite a bit. I belive that filtering has its purposes, but it should be used with caution.

Eh, stop wasting your time with this stuff. Just concentrate on getting traffic and making people want to visit your site. Everything else will take care of itself.

I only filter when there is a site that offers the same thing as mine. IE on my soccer site which offers a free fantasy game i usually get some "free fantasy game" ads. Really dont wanna lose visitors to that.

If people are trying to make a living from their Web sites, it seems prudent for them to take it pretty seriously, and leave nothing for granted.

Adsense is going to show the highest bidder, so say your ad looks something like this:

    -----------------
    Ad 1
    .50 cents
    -----------------
    Ad 2
    .25 cents
    -----------------

While, if you filter ad 2 because it pays lower, all that mean is Ad 3 will get bumped up and will be less than 25 cents.

You must be careful with filtering but do filter out the ebay ads.

    I second that!
As far as I know, Adsense will try to find the best ads to display and amongst those it will display the ad that pays the most in the 1st position.

By the way, what should be filtered would be ads from competitors, so you won't lose visitors to them.

I don't filter my competitors out. I let them pay me that they can show to my visitors that their content is worse than mine. :p

understandable, but if the customer to going to compare prices anyways, wouldn't you like to cash in on the referal to the other site?

I like to advise visiters to check out other sites and see that I'm the lowest, most reasonable.
This way even if they go someehere else to buy the product I still get a bit of the pie.

interesting reading here regarding ad filtering. I have never done it, but I am considering it simply due to the same ads that constantly show up. I have ebay ads that show up and the descriptions make absolutely no sense and I can see anybody wanting to follow that type of ad from my site.

Filtering sites regularly means you're spending too much time doing something that doesn't improve your site. I only filter one site, and it's my major affiliate earner. I make more by selling their products than from clicks. Other than that, I never bother with filtering. Think about all the time you spend checking on them, checking your pages for their ads, going to Adsense to filter them, checking if the filtering works, etc. Way too much time doing something that doesn't benefit your site.

Problem is --- you filter out some low-paying ads and they are replaced with even lower paying ads -- as has already been mentioned, but worth repeating. The point is that you can't filter your way to Adsense riches. Filtering is primarily for eliminating sites that directly compete with your site.

Also very true. Keep in mind that whatever G does, it does to make it money. That means you make money as well. It would never willingly send you nothing but low-paying keywords if there are options. Don't try to outthink Google -- they're already thinking about how to make you (and by proxy them) more money already.
