    Excellent post!

Not that I can improve on anything you have said, but I found this reasoning particularly amusing in technuttie's post:

While I agree FS's top priority needs to be the eradication of the current technical obstacles, to use HF as an argument against captcha is laughable. HotFile, home of the obscure Latin phrase, scientific equation, special character & 20+ digit captcha.

Hey, I'm a talktalk user in the UK and I'm still getting the 7004 error when trying to download which has been happening for me since around Thursday last week. Any chance of a fix?

I suggested using a similar system to megaupload. Nobody said the captcha had to be illegible; it just has to annoy people each time they download so they're more likely to go premium. Molom, it's the weekend. They're not at work at the moment.

Have you guys read crufty's posts?

Good suggestion. All you need is something to slow the works up a bit, not bring them to a halt as some hosters do.

It is more important for them to continue as they have been, spending their time on the technical difficulties. Until those are resolved, any encouragement provided to sales by captchas or speed limits is counteracted by an inability to utilize a fully functioning host.

Not everyone is going to want to or can afford to sign up with every file host. File hosts make plenty of money from free users off of advertising dollars. If captchas and low crappy speed and shitty service is the key to growth then why has Megaupload become the second biggest behind Rapidshare? Mega has high speed for free users and no download limits but yet people still sign up. It's because people are impressed and confident in its service. That's why. You have to sell quality. If a service isn't working right or is very slow and unpredictable then nobody will want to sign up. The hosts that have ultra low speeds for free users and other download limits are on life support or mostly unheard of. They just aggravate people. Any speed below around 150kbs to free users is pretty much suicide. Check out midupload. It takes 6 hours to download a 200mb file. Where are they right now? I wouldn't give them a penny. I think FS needs to increase the speed to premium members and not reduce speed to anyone. It seems like that is a big issue. Yes, hotfile captchas are ridiculous at best but at least the speed is still 300-500kbs and reliable. I would rather deal with captchas then snail speed probably. But enough on all this miscellaneous BS. FS needs to take care of its problems and get working 100% right now. That seems to be a tall enough order without more demands and dreams of fool's gold.

I like your service -- why are the ziddu type services so big right now? How do these people get advertisers? Is it CPM ads?

It's around 4am in Netherlands at the moment so I doubt it'll be fixed soon. Maybe in another 10 hours?

The difference between midupload and filesonic is that people actually use filesonic! As for speed limits, maybe 100 kb/s was a bit extreme but downloaders do need some incentive to go premium. I can afford premium accounts but there really isn't any point getting one. The skipscreen addon for firefox (and certain other download programs) will download files from most hosts for you; you just have to cue them up. Ad/pop-up blockers are easy to get hold of nowadays; the money filesonic makes through advertising isn't likely very much compared to how much they make from selling premium accounts. Where you're right is that filesonic needs to get things working!

Just gave FTP another shot and went 4 for 4. It could be that they were able to resolve the issues (at least in some areas) this afternoon.

Edit: And 10 for 10 in RU while I was scanning the forum!

Looks as if I have jinxed myself yet again. Just checked in and from my logs it appears I lost access to the FTP about 1/2 hr after my post. Oh well, got a couple files through. Looks like some growing pains for the new servers.
