    What exactly are the purposes of filesharing sites like Rapidshare?

    Rightfully, I guess they're for friends to send files to one another. Sometimes I send my assignment portions to my friends to compile through this method if the files are too large for email.

    Somehow, others have also found other uses for these sites like distributing pirated games and videos.

    Without illegal stuff those file hostings wouldnt be very popular
