Two things you should keep in mind :
    1. Unlimited space
    2. Lots of user.

It takes some money to start file hosting. You should have a paid account where paid member can download content fast. For unpaid member you can compestate it wid ads.

A good idea is to use cloud servers or something like Amazon S3 service to serve as your file servers.
As long as it is fast and reliable, people will use it as an alternative to RS, MU, ES etc. (you should know the abbreviation since you are into the niche itself)

Yes it indeed takes a lot of money to start the business ... Server cost , Promotion costs , Advertisement Costs , etc.

You also need to have good coders/ experienced techs to fix problems in the servers and sites

You also need to reward people with either cash or something else in order to compete with mega sites like RS, MU,ES etc

    Good Luck

People have mentioned about it being expensive to setup a File Hosting site i have just set one up http://www.filethe.net using the top script and a single server with 1.8TB of storage for a very small outlay i will admit after it starts to grow i will have to add further servers but for the forseable future it should handle the current load, but the early signs look very good and will update as time goes by.
Has anyone else just started the same type of site if so how are you doing ????

You need to go for very fast servers, along with large hard drives, it's a large investment before people decide that it is worth paying to download the files.

The future is still good for new comer.
Without pay for download is a feature nowadays let say for those don't wanna pay then it have the speed capped and limit on 1 file download each time.
IMO,the nearest future is that many host will offer free to download but in order to use more feature such as URL upload then they should paid.

@mentos you seem to have a sound knowledge of File Hosting in your opinion how long do you think it takes to get a new site well known i guess its all down to how you promote the site in the 1st place but using the normal free channels like SEO and adding it to directories etc.At the moment i have the site mentioned on Digg and Twitter and has been picked up my google, msn and yahoo but i am thinking it will take 6 months to really see a good amount of visitors to the site.
Any thoughts on this one ??? Thanks

It is better to keep in mind the legal issues that you would face if you keep copyrighted material on your server. Without having any kind of copyrighted material, no matter how good your site is, it is almost impossible to survive among big players like rapidhsare, megaupload etc.
