    What do you think?

I've recently teamed up with someone working on a file hosting website and I'm told that it could be a very profitable thing to go into with the right promotion/marketing.

What are your oppinions on this matter?

Do you own a file hosting website?

Let me know if the rumours are true about the great adsense revenue generated with a file hosting website.

    Thanks!

    Scott.

I see alot of sites hosting files. I am not a fan of them because you have to make sure people own the files and do not load copyrighted files .

Surely you could back yourself up in the terms of use though right?

I mean if the owner of the website discurrages any illegal activities and states in the terms of use, all types of copyright infringements and explains them properly to the user... You would be completely backed up.

I'm thinking of purely a money making idea that hopefully could evolve into something bigger and better.

Anyone else have any views/oppinions on the matter?

    a. yousendit and whalemail are already in the market with very competitive pricing.
    b. Google has started shared applications (which should attract more users)
    c. You really do need to have good marketing strategy to make / earn revenues, many file shares are available and I am not sure if they recover investment due to data transfer costs (one file can eat up your monthly costs & bandwidth... )

some thoughts, still can't say a definite yes or no .. but good luck if you do get into this biz.

    Cheers

And how would you take care of child porn? Can you imagine yourself dealing with this issue when authorities come to you and accuse you in hosting child porn ?

I Have run a free file hosting service/'s for many years now, My latest and Final one is Uploadline, I Do not recomend running one for a newbie or even someone who is familiar with websites much.
Run something which you can use less resources and gain same amount of traffic because with file hosting websites each user can use average 200mb bandwidth each, Well for example uploadline sometimes gets arround 7k Unique visitors in a day and how much bandwidth do you think it uses during this day?
40gb bandwidth on the main server which just runs pageviews and upload processing.
    1tb+ secondary server.

In a day and thats only with 7k users and i sometimes had that figure when i had 4k visitors in a day, So imagine being as popular as rapidshare even if you have unmetered servers you have to add bandwidth upgrades because it will be constantly using bandwidth.

As for a website which runs with less resources for example domain registrar, search engine etc. They probably can live of with using very little resources and less trouble.

Also i forgot to mension the abuse emails comming in they can be very annoying going through one-by-one.
