Does anyone know if this is the same. domain.com and domain.com.au are they both considered to be .com domains. I think that they would but not 100%

In terms of SEO viewpoint, they won't make any differences when conducting a global search.

I don't agree due to geotargetting.

I don't think so, since you can have absolutely different sites on those URLs.
It would be interesting to see the actual algo on this one :)

I tried with my site (I have .com ) and I know for a fact that there is .co.uk one that I don't own and I tried to search on google.co.uk for my keywords..... .co.uk site was nowhere to be found and my .com show up right away.
