Fighting off-site automated spam

    Hi all,

I'm new and I have a question that may seem unusual.

I've seen "fake" websites pop up everywhere, mostly Wordpress blogs full of scraped content, such as http://www.hawthornepublish*rs.com or http://www.*lbruto.net/?m=20081016 (replace "*" with "e" to visit the sites).

I wouldn't care if these sites didn't provide links to a site I own. Recently, I've seen one of them drop in the rankings, and even though Matt Cutts was quoted as saying "There is almost no way to hurt your competition doing SEO", it seems to be the deciding factor in this case.

How can you protect yourself against such automated spam blogs which keep linking to your sites? What's the most rational way to deal with this problem?

    Thanks very much

I forgot to mention all these sites are - unsurprisingly - registered with domainbyproxy on their whois information, so they are probably clearly identified as spammers by Google.
