Fighting MFAs - Few thoughts..

Ever since seeing top4sites ads on my Adsense ads, I was thinking how to kick these crap out. Using the competitive ads filter with blacklisted URLs generated from adsblacklist seems to be working now.

Just came across a very interesting thread on webmastersworld. Quoting the main points here:

    More details here:
    http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum89/14438.htm

From whatever results I am seeing(on the same thread), it appears that the method adviced is NOT working effectively.

The bottom line is here : MFAs generally have high CTR
"because MFAs use clever, sometimes dishonest, wording to get high CTRs", so they manage to keep the bid low, to achieve a resonable eCPM.

Now the main point I want to ask is, is it worth blocking MFAs? Since they have a reasonable eCPM, does it make any sense to block them? Afterall, why should the webmaster be unhappy about low rates per click, if he have a reasonable eCPM, which is what matters?

I still hate seeing MFA ads and plan to continue blocking them. Just curious about what others think about it.

I really don't know why people would block ads? Money is money take it anyway you can recieve it. If your site is good enough after the person clicks your ad they'll come back to visit another time.

He's referring to manually blocking which ads you can infer to be "low paying". In some circumstances this has been shown to work, but it often takes up too much legwork (unless your site is getting some real significant traffic), and your inferences can often be wrong.

For example, a MFA site that is purely monetizing through AdSense will aim to bid as low as possible, whilst an MFA site supplementing itself with affiliates will often bid up to a much higher amount (proportionally, that is ;)). Without a large enough dataset, you're often shooting yourself in the foot since you may be unwittingly reducing your income.

MFAs are Made for AdSense sites. It is a derogatory term used for sites that have little or no content and are made for the sole purpose of getting visitors to click ads.

Yes, this is a classic one. Same as 8topsites.com. It looks like they have changed the design a little bit, but it is still the same crappy MFA site it always has been. I'm just curious how much traffic sites such as this receive on a daily basis.

I would imaging that there are thousands of MFA sites. I tried the Adsense blacklist thing and found that my earnings had actually dropped slightly and I was still getting roughtly the same amount per click. So my actually CTR had dropped.

So I just deleted all of the MFA sites out of my competitive ad filter and things are back to normal.
