No use even with top literacy rate when you cant find jobs in your own country. With USA embargo, even if you are a professor in Cuba, there aren't many jobs for you.

the US embargo is a cruel and heartless move against the cuban people that has caused much suffering and pain and has rewarded fidel castro with tons of arguments against the west and cemented him in power...

the USA loves to punish civilians with embargos and claim that it somehow punishes the dictator too  but it is in fact pure economic terrorism against the citizens of cuba...

He isn't a dictator. When your country is being threatened almost daily, security measures have to be taken, when the UK was being threatened back in the WW2 days, we did not have votes then. When the USA lifts its sanctions and changes it's tune towards Cuba i'm sure they would have elections. VIVA FIDEL.

I'm not saying that the illegal aliens are stupid. Many of the illegals are campesinos that do not have any education and are illiterate. They come to the US for yardwork and construction jobs.

Have you been to the US border and Mexico and Central America.

I've been there and I know. I've spent a lot of time in the rural areas and I also speak spanish.

Whoa ! The U.S. is under no obligation to trade with anyone. Cuba has the entire world to trade with, but it seems not many people want anything to do with a dictator. That is not our fault.

Unfortunately the Castro regime made the move of being an enemy of the U.S. long ago, and thus, we choose not to buy their Bananas, and Rum , and Cigars.

Why isn't Russia trading with them ? They seem to be buds.

Personally I think trading opportunities shouldn't be at the discretion of the government but rather the businesspeople who want to profit from trading. I think free trade should be a must and I'm suprised you would think otherwise.

Btw Cuba probably trades with Russia, who says they doesn't.

President Raul Castro warned Washington that Cuba would keep its defenses up no matter who wins November's U.S. presidential election, but failed to announce any new changes to the communist system during a speech Saturday.

In a 48-minute Revolution Day address, Castro also told Cubans to prepare for tough times ahead as rising oil and commodity prices take a toll on the island's economy.

Cuba is in better shape than it was after the fall of the Soviet Union. In those times food was rationed and people were limited to one 2oz roll of bread per day.

Cuba recovered afterwards with tourism and remittances sent by Miami Cubans. Howver, the recovery was also due to the cheap food and oil of the last 15 years.

Cuba has not made the necessary economic and political reforms. It's take the average Cuban 20 years to save enough money to buy a microwave. Food and oil have gone up 100% over the last couple of years. A recession will hit the tourism and remittances hard. That's why Cuba is in for some tough times.
