Few simple rules when picking a target niche keyword...

When building a new niche site I try to meet the following criteria:

    • Go to Google keyword tool (I use the one available from inside Adwords/Opportunities/Keyword Tool) or alternatively you can go to www.google.com/sktool
    • It's best to use keywords associated with a product, as you will have more options on monetizing it
    • When you search make sure you display the Cost Per Click
    • Make sure there are at least 1,000 monthly searches, 2,000 preferrable (you can add a filter for that)
    • If you plan on doing AdSense, make sure cost per click is at least $1.00 for your keyword, $0.50 can also be justified if you found a phrase with higher traffic
    • Sometimes I put maximum of 50,000 local searches so I filter out the keywords that are too competetive and obviously already taken.
    • Search the keyword without quotes - make sure it returns less than 50,000 results
    • Search the keyword in quotes to see how many sites have that phrase - make sure it's less than 10,000
    • Search allintitle:"keyword phrase", if this is less than 1000 it is very likely you can get top rankings
    • Make sure the top 10 results for the phrase without the quotes do not have a high page rank (preferrably no pagerank whatsoever)
    • check the backlinks to the top 3 results in Yahoo Site Explorer, make sure you can build that many relevant links, before you begin building
    • before you spend money on a domain name - build a few hub pages - build a page for each keyword you are targeting on things like Squidoo, Wordpress, etc. and start linking to them to see if they will show up in the top 100 results. If they do, then you can buy the domain name and modify all these pages to link to it. In other words what you want is to establish a few pages as authority on the subject, rank them in the top 100, then have them link to your main money site.

Any other ideas, feedback, suggestions, are more than welcome!

    Good luck!

Thanks for putting this together. I used to do the same type of process but now I've been using market samurai everyday. Its addicting because it does all of that and more and has turned my internet marketing success around. Either way it looks like you have a clear plan and structure to follow which is imperative.

Guruji has made an important point about using hard-to-win keywords. It never hurts to add one or more keys with heavy competition. Eventually you may rank for them as well. And of course, the more related words used the better your page LSI will be. Help the search engines help you by using a wide lateral selection of keywords as well as the vertical choices.

This is a great list for someone like me who is just getting started in SEO.
This step seems like the most important, though people often times overlook it.

Oh by the way, just thought I'd throw in this little tid-bit that I occasionally use and did again last night... Two leading newspapers in my niche ran stories about my niche and with that I used the following keyword structure: "[newspaper name + niche]"

It's great for a quick boost.
