    Hi

Well basically I have a maths test on Monday, and was wondering if you can give me the answers to a couple of question below, simply because im unsure of how to work them out, I know their simple, but its been a while

    1. Find the value of:
    _1_
    0.5^2

    2. Estimate the vaule of:
    407 x 2.91
    0.611

3 Harry drives 182 MPH, his average speed is 35 MPH, how long does the journey take, give you answer in hours & minutes (Might need an explanation on this)

    4. Nicole buys 2.3kg of apples & 1.8kg of plums
    shes pays £7.18
the plums cost £2.20 per kg

What is the cost of 1kg or apples (I can do some of the working out for this, but then I get stuck)

    Rep to all who help.

Il do number 4 just because its fun and i don't have time for the rest anyway.

    1.8 x £2.20 = £3.96 she spent on plums

    £7.18 - £3.96 = £3.22 for 2.3kg of apples

    £3.22 / 2.3 = £1.4 cost of 1 kg of apples.

    Answer #1:
    0.5^2 = 0.25 = 1/4
    therefore 1/(0.5^2) is the same as 1/(1/4) = the same as 4/1 = 4
Just a bit of fraction rearrangement on that one.

    Answer #2:
The key word here is estimate, so it's reasonable to round the figures up or down.
Therefore 407 is about 400, 2.91 is about 3 and 0.611 is about 0.5 (it is just an estimate).

    So an approximation is: (400*3)/0.5 = (400*3)*(1/0.5)
Well 400*3 is obviously 1200, and 1/0.5 is the same as 1/(1/2) which we know, from Answer #1, rearranges to 2/1 = 2.
    So the value we're after is 1200*2 = 2400

    Answer #3:
Complicated fractions, so you'll need a calculator for this one.
    Here's how to do it:
    Speed = distance / time
therefore time = distance / speed
time = 182/35 = 5.2 hours (remember you are working in miles per hour).
Or put another way 5 hours and 2/10 of an hour. Since an hour has 60 minutes, 1/10 of an hour is 6 minutes and 2/10 is 12 minutes.
So the answer is 5 hours and 12 minutes.
