few questions on AdWords, i cant find answers to.

    Hi,

    ive been lurking for some time now, finally decided to register, hope i can be helpful soon ;). I have pretty limited experience with AdWords, but for some time now i'm trying to imbibe knoledge and all possible info. So i have few qustions, would rly appreciate if i can get answers to.

    On search - keywords bidding - how big of a facor acount history is for getting top position. I mean why, when i have great quality score, pretty decent landing page, high bids, the system randomly gives me position and charge me alot less than my bid. How do i climb positions than?

    On content network - i can't see any reaseon in using huge number of keywords (unless u dont want to target anything). As far as i got it, the system tries to define the main theme of the keyword list and depending on content it decides on which sites to place ads. What happens if there are keywords that differs alot from the other in the keyword lists ... it just ignores them? Dont get it .

    If I understand the bolded section correctly, you're being confused by the difference between your Current Bid and Avg. CPC.

    Note that your Current Bid is the MAXIMUM cost per click you will pay. If one of just a few campaigns bidding on a keyword and everything else (quality score, landing page, etc.) is in order, you probably won't come too close to your maximum cost per click.

    If this may be your situation, try simply raising your bids on a few keywords. Go in small increments so you don't get surprised by an unexpected spend, and keep a close eye on these terms. You should see your Avg CPC and Avg Position increase.

    Well yeah, i think i get the original concept of the average cpc. What i didnt get is why it just doesnt take closer amount to my maximum bid and auto climb few positions?

    What about the other question?

    That's a good question, seems like a win-win: you get a boost in your Avg Position, Google gets an extra dime or two. I have two thoughts on this (but keep in mind this is free musing/advice and you typically get what you pay for!):

    1) Keep in mind that many times you do pay exactly your Max CPC. If enough people are bidding on that term at that time, you'll pay your Max and be placed according to how everyone else is bidding.

    Sometimes though you may be the only one (or one of just a few) bidding on that term. Some competitors' campaigns may have reached their daily spending limit; others may have their ads being displayed periodically during the day, meaning Google will keep their ads out of the results here and there to stretch their budget. Other examples I can think of right now may include interference from negative keywords, or the subtle variations between phrase/broad/exact matches.

    In these situation, you'll pay less for the same or better position.

    2) Average Position means just that: average. If your Avg. Pos. is around 3, that doesn't mean you're always in the #3 slot. Maybe half the time you're in the #1 slot, the other half you're in #5. Or the same situation, but #2 & #4.

    That's an oversimplification, but it may help to remember that this kind of jockeying may be glossed over by the Avg. Pos., which looks like a nice, stable number.

    As for your question about the content network, hopefully someone else can help - I'd like to know the answer, too.

    As for your question about content. I find google is very good at figuring out the theme of your keywords for content, but some sites take just the right keyword combination to activate. Since you can have your keyword inactive and still get content impressions there is no reason not to try many keyword combinations and just keep your bids way low. Look at your reports often to see what content sites you are on and possibly site target them. Good luck.
