How many members of this forum are female? It seems to be dominately males in here. Do you think that is the case right accross this sector. I suppose i can see more men sitting at there computers for hours working on there projects than women. girls spend to much time sufing for make up and bags. I used to do that but i spend most of my time doing this now.
I do mean members of this site but i also mean in general. What percentige of internet entrepreneurs do you think are female?
I'd guess about 35 to 40%. I find that women generally like to hang out on boards that are mostly female oriented. There are actually quite a few web and business related boards targeted towards women. I tend to find that they fall into three main categories...freelance web designers/programmers who also run side businesses, writers who are looking to monetize their personal blogs, and retailers who got started because they wanted to sell products they made themselves (in a lot of cases this ends up with them selling additional products and/or drop shipping items). There are others of course but these seem to be the dominant motivating factors. There are a lot of female business consultants out there too, but I wouldn't say that all of them are "Internet entrepreneurs" that's just one way they can promote themselves.
give me a minute while i put my mascara in my prada bag... no seriously, i'm a total computer nerd. i used to be a pro gamer back in the day traveling around the country playing quake, so i'm down with the nerdage. now i am just getting into the whole webmaster deal so i'm starting a new phase of computer/internet stuff, i frequent this place like its the bathroom on a saturday night.
I'm here a lot too, although I don't post much. How much time I'm online in general depends on the kids being cooperative, not the search for makeup.
Wasnt rying to be funny, its just im on here trying to learn about this and not one of my girlfriends has even thought about it. not one of my male friends is doing this either. Sometimes i think everyones doing this and theres no hope and then i think about none of my friends doing it. Im rambling now cos im drunk so il stop. Izzy brewer
I grew up in a block with five other girls. Four of the six of us have web sites. One that does not is quite computer savy. I do think in general there are more males than females in cyber space. Shannon
*cough*Make a poll.*cough* See the Thread Tools option above your post? Click that poll option to make one!!
sheesh, there's plenty in my real world. but I'm off to pick up the kids from school now. bet you as much as you like that there will only be a handful of dads there doing the pickup. We have to be careful coming home because the local council is replacing the storm water drains and they've blocked off lots of the footpaths. The workers are really friendly and talk to the kids, but hey, there are only a few women amongst them. Tonight we're off to BMX racing where, surprise, it'll be mostly dads in charge, and about 66% of riders will be boys. We went to an art thing at school last night and the choir sang a few songs which were lovely. Of the 30 kids in the choir only 3 were boys... Then tommorrow I'm off to my on-site contract where the techs are predominantly male
It's still sterotyping. Change this: to this: What kind of a reaction would that get? What really is the difference?
Unfortunately Minstrel, I live in New Zealand while we have few blacks in our population you will find people saying similar things about the Maori and Pacific Island communities... from the raw statistical analysis at http://www.med.govt.nz/pbt/infotech/it-stats/it-stats-1999/it99-03.html and http://www.emeraldinsight.com/Insig...ype=Article&hdAction=lnkhtml&contentId=862024 to a reproduction of a newspaper article at http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/working/doing_a_flip_from_burgers.htm It may not be right, and it may not be pretty, but lets not pretend it doesn't happen
Actually my point is that it DOES happen and far too often... and to point out that we really don't need threads in forums to perpetuate the problem. I must have left off the <sarcasm> </sarcasm> tags in my first post...
must have. My browser put in <sincere> tags We're told constantly that you can't judge the reactions of a minority group when you're in the majority. Guess this thread proves the point.
I think the point Sarah is trying to make minstrel is that it's pretty obvious narrow minded stereotyping HAS NOT been vanquished. While the wording did make me feel a bit put off, I wasn't offended by it. I took the overall tone of his post to be one of general interest. There are almost 10,000 registered DP members, but I can't honestly think of more than about ten to twenty women who make themselves known on the boards here. Also...there IS a reason why handbag, clothing, jewelry, and perfume sites are really hot right now. lol I'm not afraid to say that I'm sure a lot of guys who work on computer "projects" also probably spend just as much time online gambling or playing games (or look at porn, heh). Personally I'm not a big shopper, but I do recognize that most women I know have turned shopping into a professional hobby. C'est la vie, and all that jazz! Anyway, if you really wanted to make a point you might try losing the sarcastic approach and make a friendly effort to educate/help/guide, whatever...but then again, maybe you just enjoy stirring the pot?
