'Feeder' sites and ranking etc

Right, I will state firstly that I do not pretend to have much knowledge in this area, so if my terminology is wrong please excuse me.

I have a website, which is also my business in the real world. It sells real, tangible goods. Lets say for arguments sake it is books (its not)

In order to improve my sites ranking within google i have visted google keywords and determined the most searched for terms on google relating to the products I sell, so here it may be things like

    big books
    leather bound books

    etc etc.

Now, in a view to boosting my sites traffic, and ranking, I register domains containing those keywords

    i.e.

    bigbooks.com
    leatherboundbooks.com

My idea is to develop each of these domains into mini-sites or one-page landers, SEO each of these mini-sites so as to have them appear high in search engines for these terms, which are not highly fought over, then redirect traffic, either through a link or some other sort of redirect, to my main site.

    My questions:-

    Is this 'legal'?
Would google etc frown upon this?
Is there a way I can get this to work?
how would I go about getting 50 or so developed mini-sites cheaply?
Would it be best to host the sites on different servers etc?

Any assistance with the viability of this project idea would be greatly appreciated.
    :)

Rather than put effort in to 50 mini sites, i would rather create 50 pages on the one site targetting the same terms as the 50 mini sites and drive all backlinks and traffic to the one domain.

Logistically it's alot easier to manage, and you will end up with a much stranger domain than 50 half baked mini sites.

    YES!!!

YES!!! When they recognizes couple of your websites to be owned by and for one single business any one would be indexed if you are lucky and if u r unlucky SEs may penalize ur sites!!

Simple!! Post ur requirement and wait for quotations and finally decide on the cheapest!

    Yes!! If you can afford.

Finally, I agree with SWEETFUNNY. Concentrate on one website and accommodate the relevant keywords. If they are very competitive then allot one page for 1 or 2 keywords or key phrases. Refer "All you need to know about SEO" thread in this forum and optimize ur site in best possible manner.

No need to go for multiple websites! ;)
