Feast to Famine

Last week, I had an Adsense "feast day ". It wasn't much but more than I usually get since my site is pretty new.

Anyway, the feast continued for 2 days and then BANG - I was back to famine. I downloaded my logs to see what happened and I can't really see any patterns.

Have any of you noticed something like this? If you have, did you ever figure out what happened?

    Or is this just normal.....puzzled.

Somedays are diamonds other days are toads. Samething happens for me here and there. My impressions never vary that much neither does my click-through rate - the variation in ad revenue must be value of the ads being served.

Since your site is relatively new, I'm going to guess you're not logging thousands of impressions/day (nor am I)- this opens us up to the odds playing heavily on our results, since we don't have big numbers to even things out.

I had a really crappy day yesterday too. :(

Google uses algos to determine which ads perform the best. That means they basically "experiment" with different ads, #s of ads, combinations sometimes. No one knows for sure, but it takes a certain # of impressions or time, or something to determine which ads are giving the best ECPM. They could be testing out new ads, and that could take a while if you don't get a lot of impressions or there is a lot of competition among advertisers in your niche.

Most likely advertisers are bidding lower at moment. This of course affects your revenue also. I have seen a slight dip one week and the next a huge spike. It all balances out and eventually increases with traffic.

I had a nice few feast days recently, too - ads from sony pictures were showing up on one of my sites for a nice price, but now they are gone and I'm back to mom and pop dvd stores again.

I hate those myself. Always frustrating to get 30 clicks and $3, but we have to take the good with the bad.

My TiVo/Satellite TV blog has been doing some feasting the last few days. I think it helps to have several sites with different topics. This way when there's a famine, it hopefully at least doesn't affect all of your niches. That's my plan anyhow, none of my sites are making any money to speak of yet. When I say "feast" I'm talking on the level of $4 or so. Maybe that's a BigMac feast.

have the same thing, last week had my best day, today it's half of that, and this is on 10K+ impressions with a $xxx daily income. You get used to it, just concentrate on monthly trends

Don't complain, I wish I was getting $0.10 per click. Since smartpricing came out I've been getting more like $0.03 per.

Thats a good point about having different types of websites. I notice that my website is very slow on the weekend and picks up on tuesday, wednesday and thursday. I am brainstorming weekend ideas currently.

 My jaw dropped when I saw the $xxx daily income. I think it would be job quitting time for me, if I got this kind of revenue. Great job!

Yeah me too. Actually my current goal is to make enough for payments on one of these:

My income has been going all over the place for the last month or so myself.

I've given up trying to figure out what causes it at this stage. I am just thankfull for the good days and on the bad days I mutter under my breath all day :D

I totally agree with you about having more than one site.

Plus, it's way easier to do keyword seo when a site focuses on a specific subject. I've spent the last couple of weeks trying to decide how to break my interests up into different websites and planning my keyword targeting for them.

Not to mention, it is a lot less stressful and more feasible to set a goal of $10 a day for ten small sites with focused content than it is to try to make $100 a day with only one site about anything and everything.
