Article directories like http://www.ezinearticles and http://www.goarticles.com . Write articles related to the subject of your website and place your link in the sig file. Be aware that ezinearticles forbids direct affiliate links in either the copy or sig file. http://www.squidoo.com . Make a lens, which is much like a one page blog. That will get traffic and increase your rank on google. submit your site to website directories. Create unique contents, update your site regularly, buy one or two links from high PR sites and submit your site to as many free directories as possible.
I would spend it on getting some work done by SEO experts (or.. just buying quality backlinks). Think of long term traffic, that'll last long! Doing well in SE will just naturally keep giving you good traffic much better than a short traffic spike
Hmm... well, I suppose the things that are really unique (like neverseen-unique) can bring traffic. Like, one guy painted his PlayStation 3 into different color and said "World's First Red PlayStation 3" - that got media attention and surely resulted in traffic. Some other guy made a fruit helmet to his cat, got featured in television, newspapers... and received hundreds of thousands of visitors. I suppose if you have some really witty thing, and you'd get digged or send a press release, then it might work. --- Otherwise, I'd focus on providing value, giving useful and valuable service & content and building a long-term business.
Buy a webcamera, and make a movie about your topic. upload it to the 20-30 free websits, and remember to include your website address. ***Kaboom***
As others have said, and as I posted on a previous thread, article marketing is far and away my favourite form of free advertising. Also, make sure that you do keyword research before hand so that your targeting low competition / high search keywords. Also, keep submitting article, eventually you'll hit "critical mass", for more info on that check out some things written by Lance Winslow (check ezinearticles). Sean
iceberg has it right... unique content (assuming it's well-written for readers and not just search engines, and something people actually want to read) can do wonders for bringing in traffic and backlinks on its own. If you can write it yourself, you can even do it for free.
