Ok, I like the benefits of building a directory site. I can tell that you need hard work , money and lots of patient to build a good one. As a newbie here, instead of making tons of mistakes. Care you kindly share some fast track tips on how to build a successful directory site ?
Yes, don't do it. There are tons of directories out there already that are doing a great job, there's really no need for ANOTHER web directory...

Well your call but to be totally honest.... Its very hard for a newbie to become the next big thing in the directory game. If not competition then spammers and always the $$ you have to invest is getting more and more expensive and the price of links cheaper so.... your call, not that im trying to discourage you but the comments above are the reality of todays web directory scenerio.... Good luck to you regardless thx malcolm But you do what you think is the best
You take the advice or, research and study a lot about directories, SEO, and advertising/marketing methods. Apart from things you can learn, you simply need money to invest. Many directories are promoted by submitting their links to other directories. Starting with that, you also want to promote it at many other webmaster forums, via blogs, articles, etc.
Whew! Seems like a tough road ahead for a newbee! Thnks bros for the advice. let me chew on it and see if I can bite the bullet or not!
My advice is to pay attention to the quality of the links your accepting. Don't give up if it takes you awhile to get any kind of PR. Try to get featured links on other directories main page. Dont charge anything unles you have a PR of at least 3. Sign up for affiliate programs that are SEO related and put them on your directories mainpage or sitewide. Most of all try to make your directory quality of it will just be mroe spam. Try to make a niche directory if you can since there arent as many of those. Dont listen to others who say not to make a directory, alot of them probably have directories themselves. Just make sure its only a sideproject and not your main deal!
I would not realy discourage him/her! after all -we were in the same place not too long ago But I think Terry is really qualified to advice him--on this based on how big Linksjuice has grown in just over 3 months! One thing for sure--- before you start-- first make a $$$XXXX big budget and do not expect any return for the first few months. If one wrks hard enough --i think success should eventually come.
Exactly jhnrang: No one here just woke up one day, and said ok, I think I'll create a web directory today. I don't need any help doing it - I will just become the next DMOZ or Alive without doing any research. Everyone has to start somewhere... but if you are going to start on this adventure... just be forewarned that its a long and crazy road - which requires a LOOOOT of your time. It'll pay off in the end but by God... if you go Directory crazy (create a few directories a week with same template, same category structure, etc...) I will have to hunt you down and... well submit to them, hehe.
