I just saw a story on CNBC that I feel impelled to share just because of it's sheer marketing genius.

The tobacco companies have had developed for sometime now a cigarette that will self extiguish itself if dropped or left unattended. They(tobacco co's) have been reluctant to widespread distribution of this procuct. The did however, deftly dub this product, "The Cigarette that Saves Lives".

Lawmkers in 20 states have actually been "Gas Lighted" to institute laws requiring these cigarettes be made available.

What an awsome campaign based on reverse phychology. They've actually gotten their main opponents to publicly refer to cigarettes(be it certain ones) as "safe" and make laws actually requiring cigarettes in some states.

    Cool post :)

If any of you smoke, you may have already seen a batch or two. For a few months I noticed my smokes kept going out, went on a trip to Cuba, met a woman who is helping make these (lab tech). I agree it's still marketing. Tobacco cannot advertise, but they do, in so many ways. I live in Toronto and you should see the way they hit the nightlife here :) Without mentioning names, there are contracts with bars/organizations that allow only that brand to be in the nighclub in non-intrusive ways. Color matched and branded hostesses selling the smokes, flirting with you. Little tiny cigarette pack looking matchbooks/packs that are branded, prizes winning branded merch. etc. I actually know a promoter who's job was to schmooze the club owners worldwide into switching their brand upon contract ending... Same goes for beer/liquor brands... Just because they cannot advertise in the mainstream does not meen they don't - labeling and trademarking 'a safe cigarette that saves lives'... is... well... I'm a smoker and still say 'wrong'. There is no such thing as a cigarette that saves lives I don't care how efficient or fire preventive they make them. "Eat McDonalds, It's Healthier Now"... yeah-right. Tobacco companies have the best legal and creative marketing teams on the planet so this comes as no surprize but does urk me a bit...

Puff puff pass. (i should trademark that--pass your smoke and you'll live longer)...

I don't understand how these work. Wouldn't your cigarette being going out all the time because you've taken too long between puffs? I would think this would get really annoying.

Tobacco companies are trying all sorts of things now that so many places have banned smoking and that other forms of tobacco are being looked down upon now. I just received two pieces of mail over the last week one for free snuff and the other for a free carton of cigs from a company I never heard of and I don't even smoke.
