'faking' the existence of .smi files

recently i've been getting a lot of 404 errors on .smi files in awstats. i did some research and apparently they're related to media files in some way. anyways, these files are creating unnecessary entries in my error log, which i'd prefer to keep for actual 404 errors.

so, i was wondering if anyone could offer a suggestion on how to fake the existence of these, via htaccess or something?

    thanks.

create and upload empty .smi-files with the names from your error log.

It's called 'probing'. You'll get loads of probing from hackers just checking whether you have known vulnerable files they can exploit upon a 200 or other success status.

Bets to leave them 404 actually so they won't come back. Banning their IPs is like mopping with the tap open, it's a never ending story.
