Fake traffic to my affiliate program, fraud sign-ups?

Alright guys, I have started a new affiliate program of an adult nature. I would like to do something like a $35 payout for a $2.95 trial. The problem is this:

I have heard that there are many guys out there who will sign up as an affiliate and then join a bunch of times under their own account. They hide this by spoofing their IP somehow. I have heard that they can also produce fake traffic so that their stats look normal. They also keep a low monthly payout so that they fly under the radar.

My question to you guys is: Is there any way to safeguard against this? What should I be looking for in my server logs to determine if I am getting frauded? Are there software programs to guard against this?

With my current merchant account situation I really have no way to determine and block out certain credit cards or multiple sign-ups with one. Aside from that, using 20 or so different credit cards would be possible anyway.

Any info here would be greatly appreciated!
