Fake referals to website

Just checked my stats via Awstats, and in links from external pages there are hundreds of faked referals.

    i.e (a small sample):
    - http:// www. aamericancarinsurance. com/# 55 55
    - http:// www. aautoinsurancecomparison. com/# 54 54
    - http:// www. aautoinsurancequotes. com/# 53 53
    - http:// www. aautoinsuranceagent. com/# 52 52
    - http:// www. aautoinsurancecompany. com/# 52 52
    - http:// www. aautoinsuranceonline. com/# 50 50
    - http:// www. acarinsurancecompany. com/#

    Has anyone else experienced this?

What is the point of it? and is there anyway of stopping it as it is killing bandwidth!

Thanks if anyone can provide any extra info.

If its fake i think they wont take your bandwidth and this is done via some software which one dp member was trying to sell here, which shows fake referrals and make you go to their websites

Fake, because my link does not appear on those websites (my site has nothing to do with cars or insurance).

But it does appear to be something visiting/loading the page as the stats are showing increased page loads and bandwidth than normal, nearly x2.

Yes, but it is not all from the same ip. There does not seem to be any excessive hits from any particular ip.
