Fake bidding rife on eBay?

I am seeing lots of auctions, particularly for gaming consoles and games where the bids coming from aliases like bidder 1, bidder 2, etc.

Here is an interesting story. I wanted to buy a game which was listed and I told the seller I did not want to wait so would offer him £10 before the auction, but he told me he would let the auction run because it did not have a buy it now option. I therefore put two bids in, one at £4 and the other at £10 even though I was fairly sure no one would bid above £7-8 for this item. Guess what? I now see a bid at £11. I am fairly certain it was the buyer with a fake account (Bidder 1) that out that bid in thinking I was going to up my bid even higher. Well, I would rather buy off someone else.

What do you think? Is this a fake bid?

eBay uses anonymous nicks for some auctions:

"Bidder 1" could have been anyone.

Bidder1 etc is private i think. So people cant see names of bidder which is fairly annoying.

But "shill" bidding is fairly rife in the auction worl. I know a couple friends that done it but they eventually get caught.

Oh yes, that could be a false bidder. I have seen such auctions in Mobiles also.

If the seller has a fake bidder that wins the auction. The seller would have to pay for the ebay closing cost fees as well as the listing fees and still keeps the product. Most times a greedy sellers who phish bids will end up the loser.

Bidder 1 could not be a fake bidder, Ebay shows improper and different nicks of the buyers during the bid is running
