when picking new keywords what factors should you look at in relation to your competition to figure out how hard it is to rank for a keyword or phrase

    a. the PR of other sites
b How many back links other sites have
C How many results google return for the keywords

    anything else

Both how many results there are and how strong the competition is.
So really you have to consider all three...But it isn't impossible to make money in highly competitive markets its just a lot more work and probably more money.

I usually look for how much competition there is on page 1. Are there other sites on page 1 who have optimized there site for this keyword?

I never take care about PR when choosing site keywords? How keywords and PR are related together?

Usually I do search for keywords which I want to use, then take a look at my competitor sites and try to get ranked better by doping onsite optimization.

Points A and C are useless and should not matter to anyone.
Search for keywords you are targeting using - allinanchor:"keyword"
No. of search results do not represent the amount of competition.
