I've come to find it differs hugely between different niches.

For example; I run a PC blog as well as a music production blog.

For my PC blog, twitter is kind of helpful but you really have to go out of your way to compete with other tech bloggers/tweeters.

However, in the music production niche for example, networking is VITAL. So social networking sites like twitter and facebook play a huge part in marketing as most musicians are constantly looking to "network' and add as many people as possible. Whereas with tech blogs, people only really look when they feel like it, which isn't most of the time.

Yes. We can but only after knowing the techniques followed by others. Need to go through information for help provided on those sites and various free tutorials and articles on the subject.

If you have the budget, then outsourcing all your social media marketing could definitely help your business. Anything is possible. The more budget you have to put down, there are tons and tons of professionals out there who understands the marketing side of social media.

There is plenty of traffic if done right.

I personally think that Twitter and Facebook have much more potential than 'marketing' in the conventional sense. While you can certainly use them to brand yourself and get a good bit of traffic, where they really shine is in the use they were originally intended for, being social networks. By creating a community of loyal users/readers, you get a much stronger base that can grow all on its own through word of mouth and goodwill, rather than being on the verge of spamming or using for purely commercial reasons. Interact with your customers/readers, show them the face behind the website.

Yes and No. It all depends on the Niche and your ability to Tweet/Facebook. If you're a site like Mashable.com then YES. Twitter will do amazing work for you since you always have something to report around the clock. If you start a website and have a limited amount of content, you will eventually run out of juice to feed your audience. So it depends on what type of business you're running. Overall Twitter is an excellent place if you tweet regularly and follow up with others.

If I am to prioritize my feedback I would go with these in the order listed:
    1) Search Engines.
    2) Forum/Articles Posting.
    3) Social Media Sites (Twitter/Facebook)

That doesn't mean they are bad - I'm simply saying work on the above two as well.

So if I had to choose between FB and Twitter, whom should I go for? (I know both, but budget is a constraint).

Facebook FTW! In my opinion, the "return" is much higher with Facebook compared to twitter (given the same amount of time and effort).

Promoting your company on two MEGA social networking platforms is a great idea. There is nothing better than getting real time access to millions for free!. Another thing that is great is, it gives your target audience/market a portal to connect with you with ease and quickly.

You will have to carefully plan out your promotion strategies though. In the case of facebook, you will have to create a professional custom landing page (after you have created your 'like page' that is!) to attract and gain customers. You also have the option to capture their email addresses, if it is a good idea for your specific business. The only step remaining will be constantly updating and remaining in touch with your customers (friends, as we like to call them in fb terms :) )

Twitter has similar features as well. In short, it is best to get a hold in the social marketing scene, and get in with the changing times!

    I hope that helps

    Cheers,
    Ryzon
