Just to promote your website to possible customers. Groups are a great way to find them.

Add people on facebook related to your niche.

Start a fan page, and promote your business that way too!

I think that Facebook role for web site promotion is the same as Twitter role: it is widely famous sourse which attracts millions of visitors - so you have higher chances for your website to be seen by its target audience.

You can create a professional profile, add friends from your specific niche market by occupation, location, a mix of both (among others) and invite them to your network. You can try sending a personal message on every invite, something that will encourage them to join your network, but it should be short and to the point. When they accept your friends request you can send them a thank you note as well. Make sure to add a link to your website address in your profile. You should update your status regularly so that you can appear on the news stream every now and then (this helps people to remember you). You can also send private messages to your fans and within that message send them a link to your webpage also. Its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Hope this helps.

You can advertise on facebook through fan pages, groups, and applications. From these, your ad can appear in the ad section, on people's walls, on their news feeds, in their notes, in their updates or in their notifications. You can get very creative with this. You can use your fan pages to blast an invitation to your application, and you can use your group to send people to your fan page. You can also use ads to advertise your groups, pages and applications. You can use all of these to post to people's walls and news feeds. Hope that helps.

Fan Pages, Groups, Events and Facebook Ads are the best ways to go about things. I'd do your research on Facebook Ads though it's just like any other PPC campaign and could end up costing you more money then it's worth.
