I'm not a regular facebook user. I was wondering if anyone knows how the facebook pages work.

say there is a page for a university (ohio state). can anyone on fb post to it? or only staff/students?

also, are there usually more than one facebook pages for a university?

    cheers.

yes there can be many pages for the same university
    infact anyone can create it
the page creator known as admin can post content on the page
once you have created the page you can add your friends as admin or moderators so that they can also post some content as in posts
however anyone on fb is free to like the posts and post comments in the post

it depends on how you set the page, you can allow others to post or not, if you allow them anyone can post they don't necessarily have to have liked your page in advance. However what guests posts is not shown mixed in with what you post but on just a little area of the page.

It can all be set up in the page settings. Try playing around them them before you start promoting your page.
