Facebook open source. What that means?

What exactly means that Facebook is open source code? How other developers can contribute new application into it and how they fix it with design? Do they need to approve every application?

thanks. But what I still don't understand is that how they fix design so there is no full colours flashing applications like on myspace but all applications are of Facebook style. How they make that if an application is contributed from outside developers?

Just to clarify, facebook itself isn't open source.

And yes, they do need to approve every application before they will put it in their applications directory (you also need 5+ users to be considered).

They have special safeguards preventing an application from accessing other applications or taking over the user's facebook profile.
