I've always been tempted to get a facebook account (a little draconian I know). Since having a baby 6 months ago, I decided to bite the bullet and sign up to share picture of the little bundle of joy. At first it was great; people 'liking' my pictures, keeping up to date with friends and family. But recently I have seen the dark site of the site that was at the back of my mind when staying away from the sign-up temptation for all these years. I found a feature that allowed me to 'tag' my where I was. I took my baby to the local zoo and 'checked in', all my friends and family knew what a wonderful day me and little me was having! When we returned home, to my horror we had been burgled! To cut a long story short, it turned out a friend of a friend had noticed the check-in and knew the property was unoccupied. Of course I now know there are setting to prevent this and maybe I was being a little naive and deserved it, but it left a sour facebooky taste in my mouth! needless to say, I am no longer a member. I wondered what you guys think? Do you have any horror stories? Maybe a positive story?
You have friends who would burgle you? Aren't you a classy chick! Time to be a bit selective about who you befriend in real life and in facebook. Remember - you don't have to post everything on facebook and you can select which lists of people will see your posts. There are security settings to control who sees what and who can access what. They change frequently which is frustrating but you have to take the time to check them over occasionally. Remember that it applies to all networks. On Strava the crooks check out the local cyclists to see who has what bike that they can steal. They can check their routine and know when the bike is likely to be at home alone. Again - there are security settings!
I'm very sorry to hear this. This is a lesson learned about social media, security settings, and real-life safety. I used to have Facebook, but I've deleted it. Sure, I was able to talk to quite a few cute Taiwanese girls, but it occupied too much of my time. I need to be more productive, so I'll be staying away. This issue of safety (which I have been aware of and took precautions as best that I could) and of privacy will keep me away from it. I hope that your so-called "friend" is brought to justice.
