Both are great places for generating good traffic for your website if you do it correctly. It's your choice to go with one. Personally i prefer Twitter !!!

You're comparing apples to oranges; an effective web marketer will use both sites and will use them differently.

I recall reading one web marketer's pretty good blog post (sorry, I can't find it right now) about facebook and twitter, and he said that in general, you can expect about a 2:1 ratio of traffic arriving from facebook vs. twitter -- i.e. twice as much coming through facebook, and that if your ratio is skewed one way or the other, you probably aren't using one site as effectively as the other. I'd take this recommendation with a grain of salt though. This ratio is going to vary depending on the nature of your website, your audience, etc.

Facebook has a younger following, clustering around college-aged people and people in their 20's, especially early 20's. Twitter has a somewhat older following, clustering in their 30's.

I would expect twitter users to have a shorter attention span, but my data actually suggests that, for my sites, I get slightly more views per twitter visit than per facebook visit. Both are a similar % of new visits. Overall, the traffic from both sites looks rather similar. On my sites, I get more traffic through facebook, but it falls a little short of the 2:1 ratio; mine is more 3:2. But I suspect that I'm under-utilizing facebook.

Yes i agree with the answers.... but now a days we've divided the the optimisation in 2 major categories.. Social Media Optimisation (Facebook is best for this type) and Search Engine Optimisaion (Twitter is better for this one, and obviously other things like Bookmarking etc.) so again its more abt your TARGETED AUDIENCE and TYPE OF OPTIMISATION REQUIRED...
    would appreciate advise on this.

Try facebook first then twitter or the other way around. You have to focus on one.

Both have its own unique features. But I personally like Twitter because of it's third party tools available to keep track on our business. And it's more professional than Facebook too.

Both social networks has their own preference and working.

Facebook is a mass social network containing over 500 million users and providing them many applications and features.

Twitter is just a do follow social network.

I prefer facebook because the status update option is just a part of twitter. So, why I need to use twitter ?? :)

You can't compare Twitter and Facebook. Both are excellent marketing platforms if you know how to use them well. Since they function differently, you have to approach each of these differently. It's also true that some products and services do better on Facebook while others sell better on Twitter, but this just confirms my statement that you can't compare these two marketing giants.

Facebook DOES get more traffic, but to be honest for the specifics of my own business Twitter is much better marketing platform because I can present my offers and messages more easily and conveniently.
