There are several ways to promote your website for free online. Here are 10 highly effective techniques you can start using right now.

    1. Write articles or free reports for other webmasters to publish and put your website address in the by-line. If you can write good content, your articles will be published and a lot of readers who like your article will start using your website.

    2. Arrange Joint Venture partnership with Webmasters and List owners.

    3. Add your ad or website address to your own email signature. Thus, each time you send an email, you'll promote your own website.

    4. Start exchanging Links with Other Webmasters. This is another very effective strategy to generate targeted traffic to your website free of cost.It involves contacting other webmasters for a probable link exchange partnership.

    5. Add a blog to your site and Ping weblogs.com and the other search engines. Pinging your blogs to the search engines is the fastest and surest way to get the search engine robots to visit your blog and attract a number of new visitors to your web site regularly.

    6. Submit your blog address to different blog search sites and directories. You can submit your blog's URL to websites such as Technorati, Daypop, Popdex and Blogdex.

    7. Start creating RSS feeds for your site and submit the feed URLs to the major RSS feed directories online.

    8. Become an active commenter. Try to leave your comments on the blogs that you visit regularly. Most of the comment systems also provide a way for you to leave a link back to your blog or website which begs a visit at the very least.

    9. If you decide to have anything printed up, give your web address on it. You can print your URL on business cards, leaflets, stickers, etc.

    10. Add your own web address to your forum profile signature. Each time you post or respond to questions, your ad will be displayed. If you can post good and useful content in forums, people who go through your threads will also certainly check out your website .

Good advice. Don't forget bigger partnerships (not just link exchanges, but also content and services) and affiliate programs.

You sound like you've been into this for a while - have you ? How long ?
What can you tell me about PING ing Yahoo ?
My WinXP machine has a wobbly-fit at the 16-bit dos api when it tries to execute and I'm hanged if I can get Google to recognise my Blog either.

But this is not really the thread to discuss this under. I've already posted for help under the Yahoo api thread.

You didnt mention your own genuine double opt-in email list
I would say the best and cheapest way to generate traffic and more importantly sales - from your website, you should ALWAYS have your own genuine email list

This doesnt mean using SPAM or buying "leads" or any other dubious tactics - but simply develop your own email list linked to an autoresponder. There is no more powerful way to make your website sell like crazy

I am a particular fan of using Articles and Blogs on the blogger network

Blogs can be a very good way of generating extra traffic, but you have to do a blog the right way. Blogs are meant to have frequent postings, so they do take quite a bit of time if you do it properly. Most people concentrate on a kind of "here is my blog" type of approach, which is usually not very successful. The best way is to use a "keyword blog" approach, where you have several blogs all going for a different "keyword group" related to the main theme/content of your website

To people that are new I would say - dont take any notice of what people tell you!!

The best approach is always to try something and measure how much traffic you get from it i.e. try posting Articles then measure how much traffic you got from different Articles. If at first it doesnt seem to work, then try something slightly different e.g. with my articles I never actually put the article I have posted on my own site - I let everyone one else use my article but I try and keep the content on my site unique. So there are always different ways you can do things

Its by finding the different ways that WORK FOR YOU, that you will be successful - not by wasting time following what everyone else is doing

If you follow the crowd you will get the same results as the crowd - which is NOTHING!!

I enjoyed the thread, and to finish it off your marketing worked by putting your website URL at the bottom. Got me to visit..

I'm not a complete newbie -- have owned several successful sites over the years -- but have ignored the net and those sites over the past few years as I developed some other businesses. But when I checked my old sites recently they were still ranking 6 and 7 in Google and getting great traffic. But I've never done any active SEO.

    How could this be?

As I analyzed this I realized that I simply had basic sites with lots of useful content. No tricks, or even a blog or RSS. I'm not saying those things aren't important -- probably for new sites they are. But one of my sites has never been updated since 1999 and its a PR6 and still gets good traffic. I'd say useful content should be your first focus.

:D It looks like very one has a car excpet me.

    Anyways i like this tip.
    14. Be a frequent poster in google groups and yahoo answers

I always wonder is it worth to pay 299$/year to get included in yahoo directory (which is not refunded if not included). A better way to get a link from yahoo.
    :)

That suggestion made me imagine a vaudeville comic, you know, the kind that makes jokes about their wives and has a guy in the shadows hitting a drum riff after delivering the punchline:

"I put a sticker on my forehead and went to the mall...

My Google Page Rank jumped from 0 to .5 in two days."

    <badda boom>
