External Links Help SEO - Not sure I agree

I read an article that says "modern search engines such as google penalize web sites that don't link out."

    It also says:

I'm not sure I'm buying into this article. I've always thought fewer external links were better. And it is always best to keep them nofollow. What do you think?

I would say that giving some external links related to the content is the better website rather just not linking into any website. A good website always gives links to external resources. They don't restrict reader to stick with the same website. Linking to external website should be limited, and also I hope the search engines would analyze the linked source also to find whether you linked to the appropriate resources.

Google think it is unnatural not to link out, that does not mean they will be penalised necessarily, but linking out can help ranking.

I think that the differences are so small it's not even worth worrying about. I certainly don't think you'll get penalised. Do your experiments, make your own conclusions.

This might be considerd in the google calculations, but its probably not a huge thing.

there are also rumours going around that linking to google would do your website some good.

I always try to be as natural as possible. And that means that I link to other interesting sites.

I do not know if G appreciates that. But I do it anyway for the benefit of my visitors.

Actually link blackholes are fairly common (see: wikipedia.com) and don't get penalized at all. In fact, it can help internal PR.

Now if you're doing all sorts of grey-hat stuff and you have no out links that might prompt a hand check ,and your other tactics may get your penalized...
