External links affect on page rank

The back links to my site all point to my home page. I got many of these back links via reciprocal link exchange that required a link to my home page.

Are these external links having a negative affect of any kind on that page's ranking?

Only if you are linking to linkfarms.

If you are getting links this way from on topic sites it can only help.

Probably you just haven't seen the positive effects yet as it takes some time.

Are you asking them to link to your site with the correct anchor text (with your primary phrase you are targeting)?

Are you speaking about the same URL as in your profile?

If so, Google does not show your backlinks (as yet demonstrated with the link: search) for that website. I do see you have 7 on Yahoo!, MSN and a few others. I'm not sure have many reciprocal link trades you have made nor other details about each but, you may notice a PR increase as these get updated in Google, Yahoo!, etc.

I don't even understand your question. You say "required a link to my home page." Don't you mean required a link from my home page?

Then you talk about "external links". Do you mean links on your page pointing to an outside URL? We normally refer to these as "outbound links". When you use external links I'm not sure if you are talking about outbound links (OBLs) or inbound links (IBLs).

Then you ask if this is having "a negative effect on your page's ranking". What ranking? Are you taking about SERP placement, or ranking in the index, or are you talking about PR or PageRank ranking?

But I guess the answer to your question is no, I don't believe that a reciprocal link exchange will have a negative affect on any of your rankings. Read this InfoPool Article for more information on the subject.

So basically, if I have a links page, and only link to good sites, then It's all ok?

Some of my colleagues reckon that having external links can only be detrimental, and will never have any direct positives on the site at all :(

Yes, a lot of SEO canvassers use that function to scare web site operators, but it's not the actual count at all. The true count is "private" and it's shown from your webmaster control panel where it can be 1,000 times more.

They also use software that is outdated, obsolete or just doesn't work (no real expertise) because I have seen reports submitted about our sites that mention "but you have no DMOZ or Yahoo links" which they would find if they did look properly.
