If you use a keyphrase such as "great widgets for sale" would you rank well for "widgets for sale" or just "great widgets for sale"? Thanks
I believe you would better rank for "great widgets for sale", but it would help much for "widgets for sale" too. Actually, I believe that you should let Google clearly understand what is your website about by using the same linking text and the shortest it can be, so that Google has nothing to choose from, simply one short phrase...
I also think it would help you mostly for "great widgets for sale" although it would also help with "widgets for sale"..If I were you, maybe try using the anchor text as "great widgets for sale" but then using the title tag as "widgets for sale"..That may actually help you with both
Yes, you would rank better for all the keywords in the anchor text. Then it depends on the competition - long tail keywords have better chances of ranking high.
When choosing which terms to build external links, I believe you'll get better ranking for the exact anchor text that you apply, but any of the keywords in the anchor text will get some extra push. The competition factor does play an important role also as well as the site you are getting the link from and its trust factor.
You'd probably rank better for "great widgets for sale." You'd also probably get some points for great widget and widgets for sale.
My main reason for asking is that more and more sites are requiring that the link text be more readable or include your company name. So my keyphrase would be "Sitename my key phrase" or something similar. BTW, Thanks for your comments everyone
