External Hard Drive: Windows System Failed to Write

Whenever I connect my external hard disk (500 GB), a plug and play USB disk, I get this notice "Windows System Failed to Write". The effect is that my external hard disk is not recognized in my computer or that it does not appear in My Computer as one of the hard disks.

Is it a problem with USB connector? Or is it a problem with my laptop? Or is it a problem with my Seagate external hard disk?

Impossible to say what the problem is without seeing it but if the device is recognised and the drivers installed by the computer when you plug in the usb I would hazard a guess that it's the external HDD. Easiest way to check that out is to try it on another computer.

There are some cases before me like this. I didn't found any valid reason for this yet. But one thing you can try out is - get a shorter usb cable(say 6"-10'') from your external hard drive manufacturer and try connecting with your pc. Sometimes, it may happen that a slightly small voltage drop can create this problem from the port. It has worked with some people.

Thank you mcfox and albert for the input. The external harddisk is working fine again. But I expect this problem to show up again. I didn't do anything to fix it. I haven't found the solution. The drive just came back to life by its own.
