External blog or articles in my own web site?

    Hello,

I am trying to promote a new site. For that purpose, I will write some articles related to the field the web site deals.

In order to have better diffusion and optimization of SE, I am wondering whether I should open a blog or put my articles in my web ? Actually, does it matters?

There are 2 ways you can do this. If your site is established you will be better off adding the articles to your site.

If your site is not well established you would be better creating another blog site for your articles and promoting that as a totally seperate site. When the blog is established, you can then add in content links from the articles to your original site.

I am a big believer in using a blog in conjunction with your website. In fact I do not even start a new website without starting a supporting blog at the same time.

A blog, especially if done in WP is a great source of relevant inbound links to your site (host your blog on a different server). If your site is established already, I would still recommend a blog and do at least three blog entries a week and then maybe just one website entry a week. This will give you good steady growth with fresh content on both.

The blog is also good for deep linking into your website. If you write a particular part of your websites subject matter, you can then link directly to that internal page thereby boosting your potential for a higher search return for that particluar subject.

Hope my two cents helps.......... :)

Very well said logodesign, the blogs use is not just for backlinks it is also a powerful marketing tool too for sites that offer services or sell products through the main site. It builds trust with the visitors and makes them feel more confident to do business with you (well, not likely if your blog is dead).

Amen, brother! There are few sites that couldn't benefit from a blog. The cost to benefit ratio outstanding!

In fact, that's the biggest mistake we made with the launch / development of Text Link Center. Since I'm a poor programmer (I've been playing with php one year) it was quite a task developing a secure text link buying / selling system. We should have started the blog first with an htaccess redirect to the blog. I should have been pushing my agenda and attracting new members even when the site was just a bunch of ideas.

NEVER divide your forces unless there is a GREAT reason to. The only good reason I can think of would occur with marketing. There are reason to have a Gibson and Epiphone (if you are a guitar person) or Chevy and Cadillac (if you are a car person). However, in both examples each "brand" is being fully marketed. GM probably didn't say "Well, we don't have the budget for the Superbowl commercial this year for the Cadillac".

There is TREMENDOUS SEO benefit to launching a blog on a pre exisiting site than starting a new one. I can start a new blog on my established sites and my blogs will probably rank the next day. A brand new blog may take months to rank for the same term.

Don't get caught up in this "flanking" concept. If you think you are will conquer the market better with two sites, you are probably wrong (back to the limited budget problem). A lot of peole think they will "flank" their competition if they have 2 sites. This is almost never the case. The flank analogy is bad for most web decisions. Instead, you should use the "sharpest knife" analogy. Only your sharpest knife will be able to cut deep enough to rank high. A second blade will simply thicken your blade and hold either site from seriously ranking.

The longer I've made a living online (nearly 5 years now), the more I've realized that I would have been better off just doing one thing and doing it EXTREMELY well. If you put all your blood, sweat, and tears into a single domain that you really beleive in, it's hard to fail right now. This won't be the case in 10 years.
