Explosion in traffic from google & yahoo - why?

    Hello fellow DPers,

For the last two days, my traffic has been absolutely massive. It is all google/yahoo traffic. I know it is a low traffic site (used to get about 50 uniques per day, now 150ish). Just wondering why this might have happened? I did publish one very popular item a few days, but many of the searches are from different keywords.

I want to know what I did right! Is it related to a Google update? I cant see this being the reason, as I was already ranked well within the top ten for many searches..

    I'm confused

You need to look at your logs and see what search terms are driving more traffic this week than last week. Then build on your success.

    Google updates every single day.

Perhaps your site just came up from the Google sandbox if it's only a few weeks/months old.

Most new sites only get their homepage and perhaps a few more pages indexed during the first weeks or months and when they are proven "trustworthy" will Google let you up from the sandbox and index the whole site and improve your ranking. This can increase your traffic over night.

Have you checked if your ranking changed lately for the most popular keywords?

The URL is the first one in my sig, sorry.

I was thinking sandbox as well, just a quick q on how it works..

Could it be in sandbox for some search terms? Is that how it works, or is the whole site "sandboxed"? I have always received some SE traffic, but not this much..

Also, thanks to whoever moved this. Sorry..

Why don't you check those terms in the Keyword Tracker to see if you went up in ranking? That could eaisly explain it.

One of my sites also experienced increased traffic from Google the last few days. I know a lot more pages got indexed after a very long while.

Did you check for changes in the number of indexed pages?

I probably should have started using keyword tracker a bit earlier I guess, but I'm using it now - thanks for the tip. My pages are normally indexed within a day or two anyway, so I dont think it would be that..

I guess it'll remain a mystery for now. It could just be that I reviewed a more popular artist than usual, I'll see if traffic stays high or drops off again over the next few days..

Thanks for all the quick responses.

Either a lot of quality links were indexed, your content was featured somewhere (see referrer logs for this) or your site got rid of the sandbox effect (either 6 months have passed or you've got lots of quality links).

Thanks four your input, jackass. Tripling my daily visitors was a prety big jump, even if the raw figures are low.

It is not related to keyword ranks rising, I think it was just becuse of a review of a popular band. I rank highly for most of my reviews for a search of:

    artist album "review"

and I think because I reviewed a more popular band, I got more hits. They are 99% from SEs by the way.

I think your site must be going under a PR update. Did it improve in the recent Google PR update? And what about your backlinks? Did they change / increase in the last links update? These must be the reasons for improved rankings now.

I dont know if this is why for you but one of my sites that Ive had since June and has always been a pr0 just went up to pr2 so that may be one of the reasons you are experiencing an increase in traffic. Though check what keywords are being used on your statistic software.

Current PR is still 0 in all the datacenters on iwebtool.. but my backlinks (in google) have gone from 0 to 136 - that must be it. MSN is at 843 backlinks.
