There ARE many surfers who "mistype" ESOTERIC as well as common queries or there are two right ways to spell a word

eg: Web site -v- Website will appear as two words and bring up different SERPs or e-commerce -v-ecommerce

Sometimes even the Major Search Services can't agree on a Spelling...

TAKE WEB SITE/ WEBSITE for examples

inventory.overture.com - keyword suggestion tool - will automatically change WEBSITE to WEB SITE under all circumstances...

Yet Yahoo which owns it - as well as Google will suggest WEBSITE near the top of the SERPs

    - Google

    - Yahoo!

    other examples...

    Developement,
    Graphics Design,
    Optimization-v-Optimisation
    even The Bealtes, The Beattles
    are misspelled frequently.
Even "Misspellings" are "Mis-spelled" or "Misspelt"

Even the phrase "search engine optimization" is misspelled on some SEO's Web sites

and even on Dmoz on a few occasions (not occassions)
    ;) .

Has anyone tried optimzing Aesthically Pleasing Doorway pages eg. Flash / DHTML Intos - redirects to lure in some of this potentially vibrant traffic?

Would that be considered "Spam" into today's ambiquous use of that "catch-all" word?

Or are you just cheating yourself out of good, valid traffic due to human error - that your competitor's site may pick up either unintentionally or intentionally.

I have experimented with this technique before. It does bring in a good amount of targeted traffic. You can do it with domain names if you can find the available ones. You could register directtv.com, .org, .net, etcc. They joined an affiliate program and advertise Directv from your domain.

I've seen many sites use doorway pages that have mispelled words. They are highly concentrated with these mispelled words and have links to the related products using affiliate programs. I hate these pages because they rank high in the search engines, but provide no useful content.

you can optimise your existing page for misspelling serps by using meta KW for misspellings, and alt tags for LI images, also create some misspelt backlinks to the page and thats all thats normally needed.

Google regards anything you do to improve your serps results besides praying as a violation of T.O.S :)

actually im not sure if praying is allowed.
