The domain will not be available to register for about 2 months after it's expiration date.

    Example: http://domains.aplus.net/expired_domains.html

    Expired
    0-40 Days
After an expired date is reached, the website will cease to function for around 40 days. During this period, the original domain owner has the option to renew the domain with no fees.

    Redemption (On Hold) Period
    30 Days
After the Expired period, a domain goes into a second stage called the redemption (or On Hold) period. For 30 days, the original domain owner still has the option to renew the domain, but must also pay a $185 fine.
(other registrars will charge different rates)

    Delete
    5 Days
After the redemption period ends, the domain is deleted from the registry and is released to the public as “Available”.

I have picked up domains at about 2pm Eastern on the date they "drop" (end of deletion period). Do not check the Whois which is (very) time delayed. If you want to pick them up just try to register them every few minutes until they go thru...but your odds of beating the name-drop services (Pool etc...) is slim.

Very true. And believe me, it is very frustrating when "your" domain that you believe to be alone whatching it, get bought again after 15-20 days after "expiration date"...
