Expired domains are domains that have expired and will be available for registration soon, usually 2 months after the domain have expired.
Dropped domains are domains that have dropped and are available for registration.

They get dropped if no one renews the domain name

So again, how is that different from getting expired? If I don't renew my domain, then it is dropped. But if I don't renew it, it's expired?? WTF?

When the domain has expired YOU still have the ability to renew it.
When the domain name is dropped back into the pool ANYONE can register it.

The expiration and pendingDelete periods are there to give the original owner a chance to claw it back before it become publicly available.

You can use Oddity Software to check for expired domain name. If you find anything interesting, just wait for 2 months to let it become dropped domain, then you can buy as new.

This is correct. Domain usually drops from the registry few weeks after expiration date.
You can find expired domains that are in pending delete status( will be dropped in 5 days) with this free tool http://cachelogic.net/demo1/
