I am looking for a couple of domains, hopefully with some PR.

Is there an easy, FREE way of finding domains like this?

    Thanks

    I reccommend expireworks.com

    It's not too bad.

I use snapcheck.com when looking for domains pending deletion. It lists them sorted by PR, age, DMOZ listed, number of links, and more. They are free. (snapcheck.com, not the domains  )

    Thanks for the info.

How long does it take for a domain to be available after it has expired?

Found a couple on expireworks.com that expired earlier this month yet cannot register them!

If they have gone through the drop cycle and were decent domains, then of course other folks have grabbed them first.
There is a whole cottage industry surrounding expired domain names ( Millions of $'s at pool.com and snapnames.com ) that is almost impossible to compete against.
Better bet: develop your own PR if that's really what you're interested in (PR = toy), or buy old domains from those that own them (But they aren't free; we charge a pretty-penny I'm afraid ;) ).
