Expired domains

I was just wondering about the value of expired domains. I heard that if a domain expires and then someone else registers it then the date of registration begins from the start again ie the age is lost. Can anyone confirm if this is true or not?

    Thanks.

I can 99% confirm that, that is not true.

If it is expired and deleted from the registry, the date is reset

So as long as someone grabs it right after it expires and its not deleted from the registry it will retain its age?

main benefit of an expired domain is the links pointing to it which will bring visitors or in case of a good name the typ in traffic. Anything else is bonus and should not be expected.
