Has anyone ever heard of/tried making money by registering expired domains with high PR's, and putting Google Adsense on them? I have found many sites that are newly registered that recently expired are just loaded with Adsense & Ad Searches, so it got me wondering, is the return on the domain registration fee worth it?
every day thousends of domains expires, so if you are first then it is worth. but very hard is to be first.
Usually people register expired domains with good pr and sell them out. It's not good to develop a site with it and put adsense ads on it,coz you'll never know if the domain has been banned by Google!
There are available softwares to find out expiring domains. You can bid on them if too costly in sedo/tdnam etc, or else try to register it the time its dropped.
Actually, the pagerank on dropping domains is not valid. You can check for the validity of a domain at my new site, http://www.smartpagerank.com. However, when looking for expiring domains, I use http://www.odditysoftware.com, http://www.pcnames.com, http://www.geek.name, and http://www.justdropped.com.
not sure what you mean by that. SE values will reset but PR will stay as long as link stay. i used this to check fake PR http://www.database-search.com/sys/pre-check-en.php
I guess I should be a little more specific. The PageRank on dropping domains is USUALLY not valid. Generally the domain will loose many of its links, plus it will be dropped from G results.
You cant be sure but if you check it in internet archive you can see its evolution (although there is no gurantee to miss it). Most of the domains are very old and disappeared before adsense appeared.
This leaves them no chance but watch the domain transfer to some domain capturing company even before it will become available to the public again. Usuall that happens too fast for us to be able to fish for good domains just like that.
I saw an interesting thread on SP the other day, talking about how pagerank is always reset to 0 when a domain expires. And any backlinks that were first shown before the expiration date will no longer count in determining the new PR.
I doubt that is the case, because a lot of PR is determined by backlinks - and that shouldn't change when the domain name drops
Actually, I think you'll find the PR drops on the next update. If the links stay there is no reason why you shouldn't regain PR after the second update, but that's 6 months down the track
Regarding making some money off the expired and now parked domain, one of best paying expired names has got crap PR but it has several hundred backlinks which keep generating views and clicks. So don't just look at PR if you want to get some PPC revenue the number/type of backlinks is also very important. As Aaron just mentioned dropped/expired names don't always lose PR. If they lose the backlinks that are generating the PR, sure the PR is likely to disappear. You have to analyse and figure out (guess) if those links will stay after a few months. I have a few domains that did not lose their PR in this update and I did nothing to them since I picked them up. They stayed PR 3s.
My core business is based on expired domains. I find 99% retain their pr as long as you dont do anything stupid from them. Revenue generation is hit and miss. We bought a big domain for $1500 that went on to generate $4,000 a month, while others scrape by with $1 or so a day. Success in this field lies with experience i believe.
