expired domains... worth it?

I'm thinking of purchasing some expired domains, to utalise their PR and links and age.

I can't find any within my niche, specifically...

ie: the domain names are not similar to what I am doing... But...

I figure I can build them up, and then link from them to my site.

If I were to try buy some, would they necessarily keep their age/PR/links?
Or do expired domains loose them in the transfer process?

In effect am I merely buying a very expensive domain and gaining no advantage from it?

    Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

i think if u find a domain that had a lot of back links, say in yahoo stats...and u buy it, u will need to make this site worthwile for the search engine to come, and re-establish the back links to the site, though its hard to belive a site with a lot of good back links will be expired. this is just my personal opinion. and by worthwile i mean posting regular content on the site. good luck.

and surley you want to use those domains as middle domains to your main website, i had a similar conflict on this with an expired domain that actually had a good link to it, but found it was probably wortless as pr juice from the good domain wont be delivered fully if i will make this expired domain as a middle domain for my site.

Once ownership is transferred after the domain being dropped, Google would treat it as a new domain. So you would still be vulnerable to the sandbox. I wouldn't recommend you buying a dropped domain as you never know its past, i.e. whether it was deindexed, penalized, etc...

    Hi, solardrift

I would like to recommend you to use some SEO tools like SEOQuake add-on and backlinkwatch to analyze the domains for its history and find if the anchor text of back links would relate to your current niche though the PR value would not get lost when transferring.

    all the best,

If it has decent PR it might be worth it? Google doesn't always revert it back to N/A, and even if it does, it's not often instant.
