Is it true that expired domain names are automatically deleted by DMOZ. If I try to snap up a DMOZ domain, is it likely that the site will be immediately delisted?

If I understand correctly, the system is automated and flags/moves the listing to the unreviewed pool when it expires. I'm sure that editors review the site before deleting the listing - so if there's a drastic change of content and is no longer relevant or has no content (parked page), I'd expect that the listing would be deleted.

Many downstream users of the directory data may never update their listings, so there's a chance that it'll remain listed in the many mirror. Just bear in mind that these mirrors may provide little if any benefit.

Yes. Chances are that by the time you buy it it will already be delisted though since the public pages take longer to update than the editor side you may not notice it immediately.
