The quality of the links to the expired site keep it valid to the eyes of the engine So i agree about the backlinks but your claim that only (or mostly) backlinks count for PR is not true, however everyone is entitled to believe what he wants. Even direct or indirect if you have a blank page you would get PR0 If it was as you said it would be called Popularity Rank and not PageRank (also when i miss the boat, i usually take the plane, always there on time)

Hi Dataminer, It wll stay until the next PR update and during which you need to build some Quality Link building. I won't rate much importance to Mr.M*** Cu** of google since Ifeel he has lied and most of teh domainers know that for sure now! See basically google is a commercial company and they are into selling Ads in abig way so do u expect them to support their own small competitors? So they have used him as a scapegoat to flood market with false and misconceptions. Expired Domains Older links will be relevant but you should not depend only on those you need to really owrk on the sites to sustain your PR. This is what I have observed over 5-6 PR updates in the past!
I agree with sweetfunny on his views too. I too have experienced this but no body knows about Googles Algorithm so its Trial and error. So its better to build backlinks and work on content rather than leaving it without one which is prone to a greater risk of getting your ranking reduced. But as Sweetfunny mentioned it is not an Hard and fast rule for Ranking you have to use common sense and rely on your fate
