Experience with third level domains

As a way of marketing, I am working on third level domains for a few local businesses that do not have a web presence to date. I have a decent url for this type of service and was wondering what the chances were of these sites doing well in the major search engines:

    Examples are: company-name.my-domain.com or company-name-city.my-domain.com

Can these sites be effective to allow the clients to gain search engine ranking and traffic if they used it as their main website?

Ok, do you have any experience with this option?

When I came to work for the company with whom I now employed, they had multiple websites all in subdomains. Each one was ranked and listed separately in the SE's. There was no issue there at all. There is still one site left as a subdomain becuase it was not worth redoing as a full site.
