Looking for personal opinions on people's past experiences with Joomla. I have a finance/stock blog http://stocksonwallstreet.net/ and I have been advised to switch from wordpress to Joomla to allow for more user interactivity. Smart call yes or no and why?

Maybe not professional but my opinion is that wordpress is simple for blogging, user friendly, easy to navigate, but just for blogging, with lack of other options. Joomla is for expanded experience, also easy to navigate, good designs on internet, but not user friendly. Joomla doesnt have built in comment system, not seo friendly, and seo url's are real pain. If you want simple nice looking company website than joomla is best choice, if you are looking to expand you blog website, try to avoid joomla. If not configured good joomla as blogging website can get big performance hit and make your website slow. There are too many extensions with different coding styles and installing them, everyone can make your website to appear new bugs, and new errors. Think of maybe switch to Drupal.

I might consider Drupal. So you suggest not to switch to Joomla from Wordpress? BTW I'm not that experienced at coding and all that.

My tech lead's personal experience after a year of working 40hrs/week with Joomla! is that is is only suitable for brochure sites, He says that as soon a site has more one menu, or you want to add social interaction Joomla! requires extensive modification.

Wordpress is the gold-standard blogs implemented in PHP

I love Joomla - you do need to have a knowledge of CSS to get the most from your design, but once the design is sorted there is a good selection of modules available and anyone can add them and make the site do what ever they want.

It depends on what sort of user activity you are looking for. I have personally changed over 30 sites from Joomla to wordpress, but it always depends on what you are looking for.

More details on the sort of user activity you are looking for? Maybe that will help with a better answer.

Yes, the interactivity is the main reason to switch from Wordpress to Joomla. Wordpress requires more work to become more than a blogging platform. Joomla is designed as a CMS "out of the box". Drupal would be my second choice.

Ok. Start with joomla demo site. Practice it in lcoalhost by installing xampp. Try to familiarise yourself with joomla admin panel. You can also read my thread about joomla installation.

Both of them are great with lots of extensions and active community that can help you.

IMO learn one of them and work with it. Both do almost everything depending on your skills.

I start using Joomla for 3 weeks now and I find it okay with me although I have to familiarize how to manage it. But it's really worth the price.
